Density
Determine the density of a regular metal block, an irregular object (is the crown really gold?) and a liquid.
- Change
- Volume of solution in the cylinder in cm³
- Measure
- Mass of solution in g
- Keep the same
- The solution; Temperature
- Zero the balance
- Choose how to measure the block
- Choose how to find the crown’s volume
- Set up the eureka can
- Choose a measuring cylinder for the overflow
- Tie on the crown
- Wait for the can to stop dripping
- Read the meniscus at eye level
Technique that earns marks: Wait for the can to stop dripping. Drips still coming out of a just-filled can are not displaced by the crown.
Hazard: Heavy metal block dropped. Keep the block on the bench away from the edge; lower objects gently.
Equation: ρ = m ÷ V
Classic slip: Skipping “Zero the balance”. Every mass you read includes the zero error, so the block and the crown are off by the same amount every time and so are their densities (a systematic error). Masses found by subtraction, like the solution’s, are not affected.
