Plain answers about what the Lab is, what it covers, how schools use it and what happens to your work. Everything is free.

What is free

What is Study Hack Lab?

Study Hack Lab is a virtual science lab for the GCSE required practicals. You do each one step by step on a 3D bench, the way it is done in class: plan and risk assessment, collect the apparatus, set up, take your readings, then answer exam-style questions on your own results and mark them against the mark scheme.

Study Hack is independent. It is not affiliated with any exam board.

What can teachers use?

Before a lesson: pre-practical packs, technician cards and the bench on a projector. Pupils open any practical in the Lab with no account. All of it runs on your device.

There is more on the teachers page.

What the Lab covers

Which exam board and which practicals does the Lab cover?

The Lab covers the 28 AQA GCSE required practicals: 10 in Biology, 8 in Chemistry and 10 in Physics. 21 of them are in Combined Science: Trilogy and 7 are for separate sciences only, and each one says which it is. AQA is named only to say which course a practical is for.

It also covers Edexcel GCSE: 24 practicals for separate sciences and 18 for Combined Science, each with its Edexcel core practical code and, where Edexcel's method differs, its own version of the bench. The Lab covers AQA and Edexcel GCSE only.

How many questions are there?

For AQA GCSE, the question bank holds 4,111 exam-style questions, written and multiple choice, with calculations, graph work and six-mark answers. You mark each answer yourself against its mark scheme, point by point, with a hint on common slips.

Who checks the questions, and do you promise grades?

The questions are original. They are checked automatically and marked as draft or auto-checked. None has been reviewed by a subject specialist or an exam board. How content is checked.

We do not promise grades. The Lab helps you practise the practicals and the questions about them.

Devices, access and your data

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The pages are built to work on a phone without sideways scrolling. The 3D bench needs a browser with WebGL; if your device cannot run it, the lab opens a simple version instead, with the same steps and readings.

Does it work offline, and where is my work saved?

It is a website, so you need an internet connection to open it. There is no offline version.

Your work is saved in your browser, on the device you used, as you go. It does not follow you to other devices yet, and clearing your browser’s data for the site removes it. You can download a copy at any time, free.

Is it accessible, and can I practise with my exam arrangements?

Every accessibility setting is free, and so is Exam Conditions: practise with your extra time, rest breaks, typed answers, a bigger paper or a reader. We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. A full manual audit with screen readers has not been done yet. Accessibility statement.

What do you do with my data?

We do not collect personal data. There are no accounts, and no cookies, analytics, adverts or tracking. The Lab saves your progress in your browser, on your device; it is not sent to us. Our host, Cloudflare, processes technical data such as IP addresses to deliver the site. Read the privacy page.

Using our resources from Tes?

A Study Hack resource from Tes points to the matching practical in the Lab. Every practical has its own address that does not change, so a resource can send you straight to the practical it is about.

The Lab is free, with no account, so anyone with one of our Tes resources can open the practical it is about.

A Tes purchase is not linked to Study Hack: Tes has its own account and checkout.
