Why I built it

Required practicals are some of the hardest marks to get, because many students only do each one once, in a crowded room, and are then asked to write about it from memory.

I wanted every student to be able to do the practical properly, as many times as they like, and to see their own readings turn into an exam answer.

I built it as a free project, and I want to keep it that way. It does not ask who you are and it does not track you.

Every practical, the same eight stages.

The way it is done in class, so you always know what comes next.

  1. PlanThe aim, the method and the risks.
  2. CollectPick out the apparatus you need.
  3. Set upPut the bench together.
  4. ReadingsRead the instruments yourself, with repeats.
  5. AnalyseProcess your own data and plot it.
  6. EvaluateConclude, and judge the method.
  7. Exam questionsExam-style questions on your own results.
  8. ReportRead it, print it, choose what to practise next.

How it is made

  • The numbers

Each practical has a model of the experiment that gives one group’s apparatus and readings, with the scatter, zero errors and anomalies a real class sees. Automatic tests check that the readings you see equal the model’s.

  • The questions

The exam-style questions are written for Study Hack. They are not copied from, or approved by, any exam board, and boards are named only to say which course a page is for. See exam practice.

  • Your work

No accounts, no tracking cookies and no adverts. Your work is saved in your own browser, on your own device, and is not sent to us. The full wording is on the privacy page.

Quick answers

Is it free?

Yes. Every practical and every feature is free for everyone: the Lab, the marked questions, Practise, the papers, the teacher tools and every accessibility setting. There is nothing to buy.

Open the Lab to start.

Do I need an account?

No. There are no accounts: no sign-up, no email address and no card. Your work is saved in your browser on your own device.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The pages are built to work on a phone without sideways scrolling. The 3D bench needs a browser with WebGL; if your device cannot run it, the lab opens a simple version instead, with the same steps and readings.

How do I contact you?

Fixes go on the public fix log.
