Specific heat capacity: teacher and technician pack

GCSE Physics required practical 1

Plan, prepare and teach the specific heat capacity practical: technician sheet, risk assessment, timed lesson plan, expected results, questions and mark schemes.

What is inside

  • Technician sheet: apparatus per group, reagents and preparation
  • Risk assessment
  • Lesson plan in nine timed steps
  • Method and the model’s expected ranges
  • Exam questions with full mark schemes
  • Common mistakes and misconceptions
  • Using the virtual practical
  • Sign-off box for the department

The practical: Determine the specific heat capacity of a metal block by heating it electrically, measuring the energy transferred to it and its temperature rise.

The pack a busy department needs before the lesson: an apparatus list per group with what to check, reagents and their preparation, a risk assessment, and a lesson plan in nine timed steps from planning to evaluation. The expected-results section gives the ranges the model predicts for a careful group, labelled as the model’s, not as a promise.

Exam questions come with full mark schemes, followed by the common mistakes and what students say when they make them.
